Thumb Sucking Program
Thumb sucking is a common and normal habit in young children. As a child sucks their thumb, endorphins and dopamine are released, making the sucking feel pleasurable but also very addictive. This can be why many children find it extremely difficult to stop sucking their thumb or finger without support.

When it continues beyond the early years, it can begin to affect dental development, facial growth, tongue posture and speech clarity. A thumb sucking program supports children to stop the habit in a gentle, positive and child-centred way.
Why ongoing thumb sucking can be a concern
Long-term thumb sucking may:
- Affect tooth alignment and bite
- Contribute to an open mouth resting posture
- Impact tongue position and swallowing patterns
- Influence speech sound development
Every child is different, and support is tailored to the child’s age, motivation and needs.
Thumb Sucking Assessment
Assessment focuses on understanding the habit rather than judging it. This may include:
- When and why the thumb sucking occurs.
- How often and how long the habit happens.
- Oral posture, bite and tongue position.
- The child’s readiness and motivation for change.
This helps guide an appropriate, supportive plan.
Thumb Sucking Therapy (children aged 4+)
Thumb sucking programs are most successful when a child understands why stopping matters and feels ready to make the change. Mechanical approaches, such as thumb guards, are often ineffective on their own. If a child is not motivated, they may suck their thumb in secret, return to the habit as soon as the guard is removed, or even suck on the guard itself.
Our thumb sucking program focuses on helping children gently and confidently stop thumb or finger sucking, while supporting healthy facial and orthodontic development. The program is based on positive reinforcement, using teaching, encouragement, motivation and accountability to support lasting change. This child-centred approach helps children feel proud of their progress and supports long-term success.
Not all children are ready for a thumb sucking program. Readiness is carefully assessed and includes a child’s maturity, understanding and desire to stop the habit. The program is suitable for children with clinically significant thumb or finger sucking and typically begins from around 4 years of age. Child readiness is essential for a successful outcome.
The goal is to help children feel proud and confident as they move away from the habit, while supporting healthy oral and facial development.
Thumb Sucking Therapy (children under 4)
Thumb and finger sucking is a normal part of early development. Babies may even suck their thumbs before birth as they practise feeding skills and explore their mouths. Many children naturally stop this habit as they grow, however for some, thumb or finger sucking continues and becomes difficult to break.
While our thumb sucking program usually begins from 4 years of age, babies and younger children can still benefit from an early consultation. This allows for assessment of oral patterns and sucking habits, guidance for families, and referrals to other professionals if needed, such as dentists or ENT specialists. Families are also given gentle strategies to support jaw strength, meet oral sensory needs in other ways, and help prepare children for the program when they are older and ready.
